**Basic Steps**: First, start by removing any old finish with a chemical stripper or sanding it down. Use a coarse sandpaper (like 60 or 80 grit) to get rid of the old finish, then work your way up to a finer grit (like 220) for a smooth surface. Make sure to sand in the direction of the wood grain. Once it’s all smooth, wipe it down with a damp cloth to remove dust, and then apply your choice of stain or finish. Let it dry, and you might want to add a couple of coats for extra protection!

**Power Tools**: If you have a power sander, that can make the job a lot easier! Start with a coarse grit sandpaper to strip the old finish, and then switch to a finer grit for a smooth finish. Always sand with the grain to avoid scratches. After sanding, clean off the dust, and then apply a wood conditioner if you’re staining. Follow up with your stain and a protective topcoat, like polyurethane, to keep it looking fresh.
